who is this guy?

Nick Laws is a guy who likes to make movies. He works in the film industry, mostly as a sound mixer, but like most other schmucks in the business of show, he wants to direct. So this is his site, dedicated to showing off a random assortment of no-or-low budget short films in the hopes that somebody- anybody- will watch them.

For a quick look at my directing, check out the reel below. To see more, I’ve posted some of my films further down this page.

above my pay grade

This short film was written by Tyler Oglesby and Jaye Starkes. Directed by Nick Laws.

Produced by JADEPhenix Entertainment.

After we did The Interview (below), Jaye Starkes approached me about directing this one. He had put together another great cast and crew, and this time we upped the stakes even further with more shooting days, stunts, and special effects. For me, it was a fantastic opportunity to direct action as well as comedy. I’m so happy with the entire team that worked very hard to make this happen.

The interview

This short film was written by Tyler Oglesby. Directed, shot, edited, and scored by Nick Laws.

Produced by JADEPhenix Entertainment.
Featuring Jaye Starkes, Antonio Scales, Tommy Cooper, and Chelsea Glass.

Although not entirely devoid of comedy, this film is among my more serious ones. It was also a relatively big production with a fantastic crew put together by producer and star Jaye Starkes. Of all my short films, this one is probably the best. I used a lot of tight close ups to heighten the tension. The score was made by recording about an hour of upright bass noises and then tweaking and combining them in post.

requiem for a donut

This short film was written by Nick Laws, Bryan Williams, and David Kaplan. Directed, shot and edited by Nick Laws.

This is a silly film, made quickly by silly people. But I like to think it has some serious filmmaking methods behind it.

This is a spiritual sequel to The Battle, below.

the battle

This short film was written by Nick Laws, Bryan Williams, and David Kaplan. Directed, shot and edited by Nick Laws.

This is another silly film, made quickly by silly people. This might be the best thing I have ever made or ever will make. It is my magnum opus.

don’t walk alone

This short film was written and directed by Nick Laws. Featuring Kate Dailey and John Grove.

This film was one of several that I’ve made for Augusta’s b-movie kings Wages of Cine. They do a “31 Days of Horror” every October, and I like to submit a film when I can. For this one, I opted away from comedy and tried to build as much tension as I could.

don’t go in there

This short film was written and directed by Nick Laws. Featuring Alec James, Michelle Cassidy, Jaye Starkes, Kaitlin Hodson, Eric E. Poe, and Dan Beck.

This film was another that I’ve made for Wages of Cine. The idea, of course, was to play with horror tropes. I include this here because a lot of people tell me they like this one, although when I see it I think about how I forgot to bring my lights and how it could have been much tighter. But that’s how it goes. It’s still pretty fun and was made with some of my favorite people.

Death don’t do us part

This short film was written and directed by Nick Laws.Featuring Emily Alsdorf and Jonathan Cook.

2017 Zombiepalooza 1st place film. This is one of my earlier films, but it cemented my love of the horror/comedy genre. I would definitely do things better if I made this today, but I still stand by it. Plus it allowed me to call myself “award winning filmmaker Nick Laws” which is pretty cool.
